Trump World Tower is an 860-foot-tall residential building that rises from its midtown Manhattan plaza setting as a sleek rectangular form without setbacks or ornamentation. The 70-story tower’s height and the generous size of its apartments were made possible by engineering innovations and sophisticated construction techniques. A neighbor of the United Nations, it occupies the former site of the United Engineering Center Building between 47th and 48th Streets on First Avenue.
Designed to appear as if sheathed in a single sheet of glass, Trump World Tower was inspired by such International Style New York landmarks as the Seagram Building, Lever House and, a few blocks south of the tower, the U. N. Secretariat and 1 and 2 United Nations Plaza. Its curtain wall is made of deep bronze-colored, highly polished glass that captures Manhattan’s changing light. The structural silicon glazing system used for assembly creates a subtle, incised grid where the glass panels join and gives the facade scale and texture.
The curtain wall, combined with an advanced structural system, ensured expansive apartment layouts that could be designed without the compromises that a conventional façade with setbacks, fenestration, piers and ornamentation would require. Interior walls and partitions are placed in optimal locations so that the apartments, ranging in size from one bedroom to six-plus bedroom units, can offer a contemporary interpretation of classic prewar luxury apartments.
